Saying India is obsessed with fairness might be an understatement.
If you are dark skinned you are advised to not to drink tea and coffee because they think if you consume something darker it'll make you darker.
Fairness products have been selling in India for like more than a decade and people think that applying these things will get rid of our tan skin.
And what is more frustrating is that they are selling successfully..
The one of the most successful actresses were the brand ambassador of these fairness brands.
There are many fairness products in India which has many famous actor and actresses as their brand ambassador.
North or South India doesn't matter. We all are fed with these fairness commercial ad.
For every ad break there will be atleast a single commercial advertisement about 'why we should fairness cream to get a job and why being darker makes you look weaker.'
Being a girl in India is hard but being a dark skinned girl means you have to really put up with all those people giving you advises on how not to leave your house, so you won't get a tan and how you should get fairer so your parents can easily find you a groom..
Maybe this topic can be a taboo but I can say most of the Indians are racist and some of them have no idea that they are being one. All it needs is to bring awareness from the tv shows but it's completely opposite here.
Have you ever heard about Lord Krishna? If you are a Indian, then you must have seen him from the cartoons to all the historical dramas.
How did he look like in those dramas?? I mean which colour??
Yeah.If you are an Indian , you know he is in "Blue" colour.
The historical description about Lord Krishna is that he looks like sky not a normal bluish sky but a dark grey one when rain clouds are covering the sky..
But people can't accept the fact that their savior lord Krishna is dark skinned.
They can accept that Lord Krishna looks in blue colour (which isn't not a normal human skin colour.) but they can't accept the fact that he is a dark black skinned male.
I don't know about North India but where I am from( which is Tamilnadu) we have a lot of dark skinned male actors which I don't want to boast because they are clearly their not for their colour but for their hardwork.
It's not a problem. The problem we have here is that we don't have enough actresses who are dark skinned.
The one of the dark skinned actress who is successful here is Aishwarya Rajesh. She is dark skinned actress and I thought of her as my inspiration. I have seen some of her interviews saying how people teased her because of her dusky skin but she overcame all those things with success..
But..
If you don't understand, she became the model for this fairness company. I don't want you guys to bash her and I am not here to do that. I am just venting my anger out. I am trying to be respectful towards her. So, if I made any of her fans uncomfortable, I am sorry. But I am not asking forgiveness for my words. I meant what I write.
Just because someone has same skin tone as you doesn't mean they know your problems and just because someone has fairer tone than you doesn't mean they won't understand your problem.
^ She is Sai Pallavi. She is an South Indian actress. She started her journey as an dancer. She debuted in a Malayalam(Language spoken in Kerala) film named Premam (which I would totally recommend you) and has been acting in Tamil and Telugu movies too.
The fairness cream company also contacted her for being an model for their product and they are willing to pay 2 crores to her..
And..
She said, "NO".
Her reason is that she grow up in a household where her sister who have tan skin usually do things like eating veggies just so they could get fairer.
She said she also had a low self esteem due to acnes in her face. She said what am I going to do with all those money if it didn't make my sister happy.

You know what I am quite actually proud of ancient India atleast the South because even though there are dark and fair skin tones queens or princesses. They always describe them as unique. It never mattered in the past.
But I am not saying all indians are racist. They are trying. They are changing for better.I am just saying most of them are clueless but that also doesn't gave them any right to talk ill about someone else.
It doesn't matter which skin colour they have. It doesn't matter where they are from. All it matters is how they make you feel.
I want people to know that making silly comments like 'I can only see your teeth in dark'.
It may look like a joke to you. But it hurts. When you hear those jokes for half of your life. It's not funny anymore.
They may put a facade being all smiley. But they might be torn by your words inside.
Don't say something racist and be like 'It's just a joke. Can't you just see I am joking? Why are you over reacting?'.
If someone you know have been going through this assure them they are beautiful just the way they are and there is no need to be more fairer or tanner. We are not a show case for others. We are our own selves. We have our own flaws but it's still a part of ourself.
So, cherish all of your faults and beauty.
I would give Indian media's a 5/10 rating for trying to end the racism and all those stereotypes. And by media I doesn't mean TV channels I meant all those influencers, actors ( minus those who promoting fairness products) , and YouTube channels.
